Quarry
The limestone quarry is located in Podgora in the municipality Šmartno ob Paki. The area of the quarry cuts into the west slope of the Pižornov vrh, which forms the south part of the ridge of Mt Oljka. The quarry is only a few kilometres away from larger neighbouring towns: 12 km from Velenje and 30 km from Celje. It is well connected by roads to both neighbouring cities, ensuring good logistics options for all clients in the wider region. The quarry has been active since 1890. Initially, the quarry was used to produce burnt lime, which was used for construction, painting, decontamination, and protection of trees against parasites. Before World War II, burnt lime from the Podgora quarry was transported on waterways by rafters all the way to Romania.
Extraction of various stone materials is performed by drilling and mining. Mined rocks are processed by fixed or mobile machinery into quality asphalt and concrete fractions and for base and surfacing material. Because of its excellent quality and freezing and thawing resistance, a large share of the rocks is sold as sorted broken stone intended for covering banks and construction of support walls.
